🔹What is CPT Code 98977?

CPT 98977 is used to report the supply of remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM) devices for musculoskeletal system monitoring. These devices are used for scheduled recordings and/or programmed alert transmissions and must operate under a care plan ordered by a physician or qualified healthcare provider. The code is billed once per 30 days, assuming a minimum of 16 days of use.

💪 This code applies specifically to musculoskeletal therapy monitoring and does not include management or interpretation services.

🔹Requirements to Bill 98977

To compliantly bill 98977, the following criteria must be met:​​

  • The device must be a FDA-defined medical device intended for RTM.

  • Monitoring must relate to musculoskeletal system function or therapy response.

  • Includes scheduled recordings and/or programmed alert transmissions.

  • Monitoring must occur for at least 16 days in a 30-day period.

  • Service must be ordered by a physician or other qualified healthcare provider.

  • This is a device supply-only code, not to be used for clinical management time.

  • Use for orthopedic rehab, post-surgical recovery, or physical therapy adherence.

  • Must involve data transmission, not just local storage.

  • Can be combined with:

    • 98975 for setup and patient education

    • 98980/98981 for RTM treatment management

  • Examples of eligible devices include:

    • Wearables tracking joint mobility

    • Sensors measuring physical activity

    • Exercise adherence monitoring apps

🚫 Common Billing Errors to Avoid

  • ❌ Reporting if monitoring was under 16 days

  • ❌ Using for respiratory conditions (use 98976 instead)
